Nature is our classroom

The beautiful nature in Volda does not only provide us with breathtaking views, but also acts as an extension of our campus. The outdoors play a big part of the student experience in Volda, both in- and out-side of class.

Friluftsliv

The traditions of friluftsliv (outdoor life) are deeply rooted in Norwegian culture and in all levels of education, it is normal to use the outdoors as a space for learning. At Volda University College (VUC) you will find several study programmes and courses with a particular focus on the outdoors, and not to mention a lot of extra-curricular activities and associations focusing on enjoying nature.

Experiencing nature makes up a big part of the student experience. In Volda you are bound to experience all seasons, from autumn rains and winter snow, to the greening of spring and the never-ending summer nights. Just walking to and from campus is an outdoor experience.

Studying in the outdoors

VUC is one of few higher education institutions in Norway to offer a Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor life, management and nature guide. The language of instruction in this BA program is Norwegian, but the third semester (autumn) is offered as an English-taught course package of 30 ECTS in Nature Guide. Entrance requirements for the Nature Guide courses (IKF206 and IKF207) are strict, but incoming exchange students that are indeed eligible will get an unforgettable experience.

For international students interested in the outdoors, but not experienced enough to study the Nature Guide courses, there are also other options available. In the spring semester students can sign up for the course NOW101 Norwegian Wood(s) which is an interdisciplinary course between outdoor life and arts & crafts.

The course ERAMAK101 Norwegian Food Culture is also a course that incorporates outdoor experiences. Students in this course will learn pre-historic cooking methods in the outdoors, as well as, pick berries, mushrooms and other wild growths for preservation and cooking.

Even media students can students can study in nature through courses such as MPRO114 Outdoor Media Production. Typically only a few students are accepted to this course every spring, and the course can only be combined with other courses in Media Production. But for those who do end up taking this course, we can promise an unforgettable experience and a lot of great shots to add to your portfolio/show reel.

Being safe in nature

VUC places great emphasis on students enjoying nature in a safe way. During the Buddy Week there will be hikes and events to introduce students to outdoor activities. New students are asked to start out with easy and small hikes and only to go on more demanding trips once they feel introduced to the local terrain and weather.

What's more, you don't need to go for an extreme hike to enjoy nature. Walking the path along lake Rotevatnet can be just as rewarding and is a trip that everyone can take part in. Our aim is that all international students will have an active and outdoorsy experience in Volda irrespective of their level.

The SiVolda (Student Welfare Association) operates a boat house at the lake, and in spring/summer it is possible to rent canoes, boats and Stand-up paddle boards (SUP). Lake Rotevatn is a safe area for water sports, since the water is rather shallow and does not have the strong waves and currents of the fjord. Still, everyone must wear life jackets when on the water.

International students are also encouraged to join student organisations, where several focus on experiences in the outdoors, for example Natura. For the true Vikings among us, there are those who swim in the fjord every Sunday (Sunday Swim) all year in the harbour downtown. You would be advised to also rent the sauna at the harbour to heat up afterwards.

Ammy Bolme, the former leader of the Student Parliament at VUC had the honor of cutting the ribbon to open the SiVolda boathouse.
