European Universities

FilmEU is one of around 70 so-called European Universities, a prestigious flagship initiative funded by the European Commission to create long-term and deeply integrated partnerships between higher education institutions across Europe. As one of the few alliances with a specific focus on the arts and media, FilmEU provides an important platform for expanding international collaboration in both education and research.

FilmEU consists of eight full member institutions, all of which are highly regarded arts, film, and creative media universities in their respective countries. Several of these institutions were already established partners of VUC, including the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (Ireland), Lusófona University (Portugal), and VIA University College (Denmark). Through these longstanding partnerships, VUC became familiar with FilmEU and the opportunities offered in the alliance.

VUC Affilliate member of FilmEU

At the FilmEU summit in Brussels in June 2026, VUC and 4 other institutions (Stuttgart Media University, Stockholm University of the Arts, Université de Montpellier Paul-Valéry and Zurich University of the Arts) were officially recognized as affilliate members. This means that, from now on, students and staff at VUC are able to join in on FilmEU activities and projects.

VUC is hoping to connect its research groups within FilmEU and to engage with other members to develop research and educational projects in the future. Already now, students and staff at VUC are welcome to investigate FilmEU events and can contact the VUC International Office to hear if it is possible to attend and receive Erasmus+ funding.

However, it is not only VUC that benefits from this affilliation with FilmEU, we also bring considerable expertise to the alliance. VUC has extensive experience in European cooperation and is recognised for its strong academic traditions in animation, media production, journalism, and arts education. These strengths complement FilmEU's ambitions and create a strong foundation for future collaboration. In particular, the shared commitment to Artistic Research represents an important area of common interest and future development.

By joining FilmEU, VUC becomes part of a distinguished European University dedicated to innovation, creativity, mobility, and excellence in arts and media education. The affiliation further strengthens VUC's international position and creates new opportunities for students, researchers, and staff to engage with leading institutions across Europe.
