Læringsverkstaden, the digital makers space on campus, helps students and staff to develop their digital skills and know-how. It is a place to meet, be curious about new technology, and to learn together.

Hi! My name is Ragnhild. I am 25 years old and I'm studying Primary and Lower Secondary Teacher Education here in Volda. Alongside my studies, I'm working at Læringsverkstaden, an amazing service open for everyone on our campus. Let me tell you a bit more about what we can offer.
What is Læringsverkstaden?
Basically Læringsverkstaden is a digital makers space and a meeting place on campus for students and staff at VUC who would like to develope their digital skills and knowledge.
Just as you can get assistance at IT Services, Student Services, and the Library, you can come to Læringsverkstaden for help with something relevant to your studies.
When you visit Læringsverkstaden, you can access and borrow 3D printers, VR headsets, cameras, digital games, programming equipment, and design tools.
All of this, and a little more, can be found in the heart of the Berte Kanutte Building, in room BK155.
Students helping students
When you visit Læringsverkstaden, you are never on your own. This is where me and my colleagues comes in.
Læringsverkstaden has student employes from various study programmes at VUC. Our job is to show you how to use digital equipment and techniques, and discuss with you how it is applicable for your line of study.
When students help students, we also get to know each other accross different study fields and join together to increase our digital competencies. Our aim is to establish an environment of curiousity, experimentation and learning.
More than technology and digital tools
Læringsverkstaden is not solely about digital tools and technology, it is also a meeting place and great place to hang out.
Through cooperation with the Student Parlamiament and Pangaia we organise social events such as Just Dance-tournaments, Mario cart races, Exam boost and scavenger hunts. Such activities, and more, will be coordinated from Læringsverkstaden also in the future.
Why do we need this?
The answer lies at the heart of the objectives of Læringsverkstaden. We want everyone to have access to a place where you can socialize, learn together, be curious and develop your digital skills for further studies and your professional careers.
In my view, this offer is an important resource for us students not only for our studies, but for our future careers. As future employees we will need to work both independently and in groups to solve problems and to relate to digital tools and technology.

From «cavewoman» to digital experimentation
I myself have started to use a lot of the digital tools Læringsverkstaden has to offer. Before I used to humorously refer to myself as a "cave woman" when it came to modern technology.
With Læringsverkstaden a new world has opened up for me. All of a sudden I have learned about sound editing, programming, animation, 3D-priting and using VR-goggles.
Today I have gained lots of useful digital skills and competencies, which I am still developing. The only way to develop your digital skills is by experminentation and curiosity and I am lucky enough to be able to test new equipment and tools with colleagues and on my own.
This is something I am extremely greatful for.
The start of a digital adventure
Finally, I would like to mention the reason why I was lucky enough to be employed by Læringsverkstaden.
In my second year of university, I enrolled in an elective course called "Digital competencies and media production". This elective was for me the start of a digital adventure that I am still a part of.
Great lecturers and interesting discussions in class and at Læringsverkstaden made me capable and driven to further develop my digital competencies. It also gave me the confidence to apply for a position at Læringsverkstaden.
